Skylanders is a successful children's franchise that blurs the lines between video games and action figures. Kids collect the Skylanders toys – usually in packs of three. When they place them on a pad device called, ‘The Portal of Power’, connected to their games console the same character comes to life and is playable in the game. The latest addition to the franchise is Skylanders Swap-Force. This game brings a new element to the world of Skylanders, allowing kids to mix and match top/bottom halves of characters to create new combinations. They can identify and express their own personalities through their own character creation.
We were tasked with creating an app which would introduce kids to the range of character options, and allow them to identify themselves with their own customised Skylander. E.g. ‘What’s your combination?’ This app would also contain a surprising and delightful AR function that interacts with the Skylanders Swap-Force pack art at retail and takes their previously chosen combination into account. E.g. ‘Scan the Swap-Force box at your local game shop to activate your combination!’
